Zusammenfassung
In der Pharmakologie kann jedem Medikament in der Regel ein Wirkprinzip (z.B. Hemmung eines speziellen Rezeptors) zugeordnet werden. Alle erwünschten und unerwünschten Wirkungen lassen sich dann auf dieses Wirkprinzip zurückführen bzw. aus diesem begründen. Ähnliches gilt für viele Bereiche der Physikalischen Therapie, in der eine Primärwirkung (z.B. Wärme) für die therapeutischen Effekte verantwortlich ist und diese erklären kann. Allerdings muss hier bereits oft unterschieden werden zwischen:

unmittelbaren Primärwirkungen (z.B. Gewebserwärmung),
-
reflektorischen Sekundärwirkungen (z.B. Durchblutungssteigerung) und
-
möglichen adaptiven Umstellungen regulativer Leistungen (z.B. der Thermoregulation) (Gutenbrunner 2001).
