Abstract

Bone marrow is frequently involved in malignant lymphoma (ML). The frequency varies according to the histological type and the duration of evolution. Bone marrow biopsy (BMB) is now routinely performed for diagnosis and staging. The positivity or negativity of BMB is of prognostic value. BMB not only allows the presence of lymphomatous involvement to be recognized, but also gives important information concerning hematopoiesis and the presence of stromal modifications or granulomatous reactions. It can also be used to assess therapeutic responses and identify residual disease and/or relapse. Immunohistochemistry is very useful in the diagnosis of bone marrow involvement by ML and can be carried out on fixed tissue embedded in paraffin or in various plastic mediums.
