Abstract

In an island roughly the size of the continental United States, Australia has a population of approximately 20,000,000, representing an increase of 13% since 1991. About 4,000,000 (20%) of the inhabitants were born overseas. Between 1995 and 2000, over 400,000 permanent settlers arrived in Australia. Twenty percent of the population speak a language at home other than English, including Chinese (2.1%), Italian (1.9%), and Greek (1.4%) (Yearbook Australia 2001).
