Zusammenfassung

Es ist schon lange bekannt, dass Bewegung die Stoffwechselsituation des Diabetikers sowohl verbessern als auch verschlechtern kann. Die Folge waren in der Zeit vor der Entdeckung des Insulin äußerst widersprüchliche Empfehlungen bezüglich des Nutzens körperlicher Aktivität für die Therapie des Diabetes. Nach Etablierung von Insulin in der Diabetestherapie galt körperliche Aktivität lange als eine Säule der Behandlung. In diesem Sinne haben viele Ärzte und Patienten versucht, körperliche Bewegung oder sogar Sport zur Diabetesbehandlung zu nutzen. Leider war ihr Erfolg meist begrenzt, weil ihnen wesentliche Kenntnisse über die Physiologie und Pathophysiologic der Glukoseregulation fehlten (Kemmer 1997) sowie Alterungsprozesse und Motivation der Patienten zu wenig beachtet wurden (▸ s. Kap. 14).
