Zusammenfassung
Etwa zwei Drittel der diagnostizierten Patienten mit Diabetes mellitus Typ 2 in den westlichen Industrieländern sind über 60 Jahre alt. Die Prävalenz eines manifesten Diabetes mellitus Typ 2 wird bei über 70-Jährigen mit mehr als 20% angegeben. Nach Untersuchungen in medizinisch betreuten geriatrischen Pflegeheimen wurden bei 50% der Patienten Hinweise auf einen gestörten Glukosestoffwechsel gefunden (Equiluz-Bruck et al. 2001; Hauner et al. 2001; Sinclair et al. 1997).
