Abstract

In this work a transport equation for the interfacial area density based on a population balance equation approach is applied to calculate the flow field in bubble columns numerically. The resulting transport equation for the arithmetic bubble volume is coupled with the balance equations for mass and momentum. The calculations are performed for three dimensional, in stationary flow fields in cylindrical bubble columns using the Euler-Euler approach. The calculations consider the homogeneous and the heterogenous flow regimes. In addition the mass transfer between the phases is considered. For the calculation the commercial code CFX-4 isused.
