Abstract

This chapter gives an introduction to control concepts that are used to develop advanced process control applications. In order to understand and develop this type of application, the user needs to be familiar with Laplace transforms, z-transforms and discrete equations. After these transformations have been discussed, numerous examples are given of simple but effective control solutions, such as dynamic feed-forward control and dead-time compensation. Finally Dahlin ’s control algorithm is discussed as an example of trajectory following control that also forms the basis of control ideas used in subsequent chapters.
