Abstract

From very early Mössbauer experiments it became apparent that fluctuating hyperfine interactions play a major role for the specific shape of spectra. Depending on the typical time scales of fluctuations, complex spectral line shapes deviating from the common Lorentzian line profiles are found, commonly termed as “relaxation spectra.” Proper analysis yields information on the dynamics of the surrounding of the resonant nuclei. This may originate, e.g., from fluctuations of electronic spins related to magnons, coupling to phonons, nearby spins, or also from fluctuations of the neighboring atomic arrangement due to diffusion effects.
