In mesoscopic electrodynamics, one is interested in the interaction of electromagnetic fields with particle systems of linear extension much less than the typical wavelength(s) of the field. The prevailing current density distribution in the mesoscopic medium can then with advantage often be approximated by a few of the first terms in a so-called moment expansion. This expansion may be obtained starting from the spatial Fourier integral representation of the current density, i.e.
