Matter-Attached Quantized Fields

Abstract

In this last chapter, we turn our attention towards the picture the covariant formulation offers us of the quantized field–matter interaction in the nonrelativistic regime. In the context of near-field electrodynamics, the always matter-attached longitudinal and scalar photons play a prominent role, and therefore, these photons are in focus in what follows. Although the limitation to nonrelativistic mechanics reduces the field–matter interaction problem considerably, it is in general still a formidable task to determine the temporal evolution of the coupled system when account must be taken of the reaction of the field radiation on the particle dynamics.
