In recent years, Operations Research methods and tools successfully contributed to generate solutions to environmental problems. In the following, one of such examples will be presented: the model RAINS as used for policy support in the frame of the UN/ECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Pollution Control. Some general conclusions will be deducted and finally further examples will be outlined.
Opening speech at the International Conference on Operations Research 2002 in Klagenfurt.
