Zusammenfassung
Die Depression stellt weltweit eines der größten Gesundheitsprobleme dar. Bei einer Lebenszeitprävalenz von 17% kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass ungefähr eine von sechs Personen im Verlauf ihres Lebens eine depressive Störung entwickeln wird. Die Depression ist gekennzeichnet durch eine Kombination von Symptomen, zu welchen profunde depressive Verstimmung, Anhedonie (d. h. Verlust von Freude und Interesse an belohnenden Reizen), Irritabilität, Antriebsarmut, Veränderungen von Appetit, Schlaf und Libido, Gefühle von Wertlosigkeit und Schuld, Konzentrationsstörungen und Suizidalität gehören. Die Symptome der Depression führen zu einer markanten Beeinträchtigung der Lebensqualität und des Funktionsniveaus der betroff enen Person. Die Depression ist mit einer erhöhten Mortalität durch Suizid assoziiert. Weiterhin steht die Depression in Zusammenhang mit einem erhöhten Risiko für verschiedene medizinische Erkrankungen, die zu den führenden Gesundheitsproblemen in unserer Gesellschaft gehören, wie z. B. die koronare Herzkrankheit und Diabetes mellitus. Darüber hinaus wird die Prognose von chronischen medizinischen Erkrankungen, wie z. B. Karzinomerkrankungen, durch eine vorliegende Komorbidität mit der Depression deutlich verschlechtert (Krishnan u. Nestler 2008).
