Zusammenfassung

Eine erstaunlich hohe Anzahl von Arztbesuchen erfolgt aufgrund von somatischen Beschwerden, für die auch nach eingehender medizinischer Untersuchung keine hinreichende Erklärung gefunden werden kann. Es wird geschätzt, dass bis zu zwei Drittel aller Patienten nie eine biomedizinische Erklärung für ihre Symptome erhalten. Somatische Beschwerden, die sich nicht durch Erkenntnisse der modernen Medizin begründen lassen, werden als »funktionel« oder als »medizinisch nicht erklärbar« bezeichnet (Kroenke u. Mangelsdorff 1989). Sie bedeuten ein beträchtliches Problem für die Gesundheitssysteme auf der ganzen Welt und führen zu einer hohen subjektiven Belastung.
