Thoraxverletzungen sind für 25% aller traumatisch bedingten Todesfälle verantwortlich. Hiervon sind je nach Art der Gewalteinwirkung bis zu 95% auf kardiale Verletzungen zurückzuführen. Eine Herzbeteiligung kann sowohl bei penetrierenden als auch bei stumpfen Traumen auftreten.
