About 60% of the words in English have Latin or Greek roots. In science and technology, estimates are as high as 90%. Although we refer to Latin and Greek as “dead languages”, in a sense they are very much alive today. There is an international scientific vocabulary in which different elements from classical languages are combined to form new words and new very specific meanings are assigned to words that existed with general meanings in their original forms and usage. Every modern language has its version of the international scientific vocabulary – the spellings and pronunciations are adapted to fit the characteristics of the language and make it easier for native speakers to deal with.
