Abstract
Positron emission tomography using 2-[F-18]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG-PET) is an effective tool for the diagnosis of various malignant diseases. In particular, FDG-PET appears to offer great benefit for the diagnosis of haematological malignancies. Pulmonary lesions of lymphoma can be visualised on FDG-PET, as a component of systemic lymphoma. Characteristic lung findings have been described in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and intravascular large B-cell lymphoma, and FDG-PET may be useful for the diagnosis of these conditions.
FDG also accumulates in inflammatory tissues, which can occasionally be confused with that in malignant tumours. On the other hand, FDG-PET can also be a useful tool for the diagnosis and evaluation of some inflammatory conditions. During the course of treatment of haematological disorders, various pulmonary diseases may be encountered, such as opportunistic infections and drug-induced disorders. FDG-PET has also been reported to be useful for the diagnosis and follow-up of these inflammatory conditions. Occasionally, abnormal lung uptake is also noted unexpectedly in a routine FDG-PET study. It is possible that these subtle changes associated with pulmonary abnormalities may be detected earlier by FDG-PET than by computed tomography (CT); therefore, careful examination of patients with changes on FDG-PET is essential, even if no abnormalities are revealed by CT.
