Die sorgfältige Exploration und subtile Diagnostik des Patienten sind unabdingbare Voraussetzung, um eine korrekte Einschätzung der Arthrose, der lokalen Begleitfaktoren und der allgemeinen Risikofaktoren vornehmen zu können. Sie dienen nicht nur der Bestätigung der Diagnose und damit der Indikation zur Endoprothetik bzw. der Differentialindikation gegenüber anderen konkurrierenden Verfahren, sondern auch zur Analyse der vorliegenden Pathologie und ermöglichen so eine korrekte Klassifikation. Diese präoperative Einteilung stellt den Schlüssel zur Planung des operativen Eingriffs und damit des möglichen Erfolgs dar.
