Abstract

Bromus L. is a genus of approximately 150 temperate grass species, a few of which have been partially domesticated. The genus originated in Eurasia and spread to Africa and the Americas, in the process undergoing substantial hybridization and polyploidization. Consequently, the taxonomy of Bromus has proved to be complex and difficult. The main species used in agriculture are the hexaploid species belonging to the South American B. catharticus complex and the Eurasian drought and cold-hardy B. inermis and its close relatives. This chapter reviews the limited amount of experimental hybridization among the wild species, most of which was done to resolve species relationships than to effect population improvement. Given that both partially domesticated groups consist of allopolyploid hybrid species, there are probably enormous untapped opportunities for using hybridization and ploidal manipulations among members of the various species groups to achieve new grass varieties for temperate agriculture.
