Abstract
The term total system analysis refers to the simulation of all engine processes under stationary and transient operating conditions. As a basis, this modeling builds upon the basic building blocks of the engine, like the cylinder, plenum, pipes, flow restrictions or throttle valves, and charger aggregates, which are described in Chap. 7. Since the calculation of the working process in the cylinder only provides indicated quantities, suitable methods for estimating engine friction must be integrated into the total simulation model. In addition, the behavior of the oil and cooling systems must be computed in order to permit a calculation of the frictional torque in thermally unsteady processes, since the influence of oil and coolant temperatures on the frictional torque is considerable. One also needs models, with which a simulation of the loads connected to the internal combustion engine is possible, in order to provide an accurate description of the boundary conditions for the combustion machine.
