Abstract

Next-generation communication networks will comprise third-generation (3G) cellular and multi-hop ad hoc networks. This integrated network can be seen as an extension to the cellular network and uses two different technologies, HSDPA and IEEE 802.11. Compared to the traditional cellular network, there is a new problem that nodes in IEEE 802.11 ad hoc network may not always be fairly served due to the different channel quality. This is because the traditional scheduling mechanisms for HSDPA are not multi-hop aware. The paper proposes to use a multi-hop aware weighted scheduling mechanism which considers the parameters in both the IEEE 802.11 ad hoc network and HSDPA network, namely the number of hops away from the gateway, and the packet delivery error in ad hoc network. Based on simulation results, our proposed mechanism achieved better throughput fairness in the simulated scenarios.
