Abstract

At the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) and upper cervical spine (UCS) regions, many types of tumors can be seen;however, the incidence is very low. Using an oncological classification, they can be divided into the general categories of tumors of bone, tumors of connective tissue, and tumors of neural structures. More commonly in practice, surgeons use classifications common in the other parts of spine. Thus, it primarily starts with defining the tumors as intradural or extradural. Within the intradural classification it is further divided into intramedullary and extramedullary tumors. Tumors that are located extradurally usually consist of primary and secondary tumors of bone and connective tissue. Therapy for these tumors is type dependent and can vary from observation only to complicated, multidisciplinary surgical procedures followed by chemo and radiotherapy.
