Fractures of the Ring of Axis (Hangman Type Fractures)

Reconstruction of Upper Cervical Spine and Craniovertebral Junction

Abstract

Hangman type fractures represent a frequent cause of mortality during motor vehicle accidents (MVA); however, survivors of the initial impact usually do not have any neurologic deficit. A comprehensive radiographic evaluation is necessary to identify and classify these fractures appropriately. The majority of stable fractures can be treated conservatively in a hard collar. Unstable and dislocated fractures should be treated surgically. A fusion in malalignment achieved through conservative means can negatively influence the long-term outcome.
