Zusammenfassung

Die spezifische Phobie ist eine dauerhafte, unangemessene und intensive Furcht vor bzw. Vermeidung von spezifischen Objekten oder Situationen. Diese ist so stark, dass die Betroffenen in ihrem Leben durch die Ängste deutlich beeinträchtigt werden. Beispielsweise kann eine spezifische Angst vor dem Fliegen heutzutage sehr leicht das berufliche Leben unmöglich machen bzw. das private Leben spürbar beeinträchtigen. Die frühere Bezeichnung der Störung im DSM-III-R als »einfache Phobie« ist irreführend, da sie nahe legt, dass es sich um ein »einfaches« Problem handelt. Die Betroffenen haben oft ein schwerwiegendes Problem, welches sich auf ihr gesamtes Leben auswirken kann (Wittchen, Nelson & Lachner, 1998; Essau, Conradt & Petermann, 2000).
