Die Zahl der Internetbenutzer weltweit ist im Jahr 2008 auf 1,54 Milliarden angestiegen, was auch mit einem großen Wachstum auf dem europäische E-commerce Markt einhergeht (vgl. International Telecommunication Union 2009). Laut einer Studie von Lewis (2009) kann der jährliche Anstieg des europäischen E-commerce Marktes auf 8% beziffert werden, wobei die jährliche Ausgaberate im E-commerce pro Europäer auf 942 € im Jahr 2009 geschätztwird (vgl Lewis 2009).
