Abstract
Diseases of the oesophagus can occur in association with skin diseases. Even though these conditions are rare, identification of this association is important. Skin manifestation of gastrointestinal disease is easy to recognise and facilitates the diagnosis of these conditions. An awareness of oesophageal disease in association with dermatological disease helps in early recognition and management of gastrointestinal disease. The involvement of the oesophagus is usually immune mediated as a result of infection. Immune-mediated disease mainly involves the mucosa followed by muscular layer and rarely causes vasculitis. Diagnosis of mucosal disease is confirmed principally with oesophagoscopy and that of muscular involvement with manometry. The characteristic features seen in various conditions are described further. Management of the primary condition is the mainstay of treatment, and specific management of various conditions is outlined.
