Abstract

The role of the ocean as a transport medium, as well as a storage reservoir, for persistent organic pollutants has been widely studied to a lesser extent, but is not fully understood yet. Suspended matter in the ocean, and in particular, particulate organic matter that sinks below the euphotic zone is assumed to play a significant role in the fate of organic pollutants that are present in natural waters and have a high tendency to partition to organic matter [Gustafsson and Gschwend (1997), Dachs et al (2002), Jurado et al (2007)].
