A New Miniature Manipulator for Laparoscopic Camera Control

Abstract

The trend in surgical robotics is towards smaller more affordable devices. The FreeHand telemanipulator is a new example of a 3-axis laparoscopic camera holder which is small enough to be mounted directly over the entry port without interfering with the surgeon’s workspace. The FreeHand has several unique features, including a geometry with three independent axes that greatly simplifies control by avoiding the need for kinematic motion calculations. To ensure sterility, the zoom axis assembly has been designed as a low cost, sterile single-use disposable component, including its own specially developed motor. Friction drives allow the surgeon to adjust axes manually when preferred, if a large movement is required.
