Discrete Problems from Applications

This book is about algorithms which solve some classical problems from discrete optimization. Such discrete problems arise in many application areas—from communications to scheduling in factories, from biology to economics. The field has attracted considerable attention over the last five decades mainly for one reason, namely the availability of powerful computing machinery. Let us motivate our topic with an example.
