Abstract

This 73-year-old male was working on his roof at 10 o’clock at night and fell, landing on his back, hyperextending it over a fence. He was brought in a level I emergency room and found to have a ruptured aorta, as well as a T 11–12 fracture-dislocation of a preexisting diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) spine (Fig. 33.1) He was taken immediately to the operating room for the aortic repair. However, his postoperative clinical status was so poor that he was not returned to the operating room for stabilization of his spine for 10 days.
