Abstract

Cracks in a nitrogen-doped stainless steel can be observed clearly both in in-lens SE and channeling BSE imaging modes, as shown in Fig. E25.1. Deformation of the matrix at the advancing front of crack is observed clearly in the channeling BSE image. In Fig. E25.2, a trans-granular crack is observed which appears to stop at the grain boundary. The specimen was mirror-finished using a suspension of colloidal silica and rf-GD sputtering treatment for 10 s at a power of 5W and at an Ar pressure of 1,000Pa using the pulse mode.
