Summary
Chapter 5 discusses the plane wave expansion method applied to the band structure computation of 2D and 3D photonic crystals. The main attention is given to computational peculiarities, characteristics of PhC structures, which are different from 1D PhCs discussed in Chap. 4. Particularly, we discuss the choice of the wave vectors and reciprocal vectors as well as dielectric function Fourier expansion. Then, illustrative examples are given which include band structures with full and partial band gaps, photonic band-gap maps, photonic density of states and off-plane band structures. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of PWE method for 2D and 3D photonic crystals computation are discussed. At the end of the chapter, the example of original Matlab code for 2D PhC band structure computation by means of PWE method is presented and several problems and questions for self-training are given.
