Abstract

In the management of primary musculoskeletal tumours, distinguishing benign from malignant is imperative. In cases of suspected sarcoma, histological confirmation of malignancy and determination of subtype prior to definitive surgery is imperative. Advances in operative techniques and neoadjuvant therapy have resulted in improved outcomes for patients, permitting limb-sparing surgery, with better functional results and decreased morbidity. The implementation of appropriate therapy and operative planning is dependent upon precise preoperative diagnosis, localisation and staging, with imaging and preoperative biopsy forming the cornerstone of this process.
