Es werden Klinik, Pathogenese, Pathologie und histologische Klassifikation der Multiplen Sklerose sowie Mechanismen der axonalen Schädigung, der oligodendroglialen Schädigung, der Remyelinisierung sowie Veränderungen in der sog. normal erscheinenden weißen Substanz beschrieben. Weiterhin werden verwandte Entmarkungskrankheiten dargestellt, wie die Marburg-Krankheit, Balos konzentrische Sklerose, die Neuromyelitis optica, Schilders diffuse Sklerose und die akute disseminierte Enzephalomyelitis (ADEM).
