Summary
The lattice structure, the bond length, the cohesive energy, and the bulk modulus across each of the three rows of the transition metals are presented. The role of the Coulomb repulsion vs. the width of the d band is examined and its relation to magnetic properties is pointed out. Band structure calculations are performed usually by the APW or the KKR methods (if accuracy is sought) or by LCAO if simplicity is asked for. Among the important compounds of transition metals are the perovskites, the ceramic high T c superconductors, and the oxides.
