Magnetic reconnection is a key concept in some of the most important processes associated with space storms, including solar flares, detachment of CMEs from the Sun, interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, and substorm onsets. The idea of reconnection, although not the term, was introduced by Giovanelli  and developed further by Dungey  to explain rapid energy release in solar coronal loops. Later Dungey  applied reconnection to describe magnetospheric convection as a result of interaction between the magnetic field of the solar wind and the magnetosphere.
