Today, genetics is part of the management of breast cancer, especially with families at risk. In fact, a growing number carry a genetic anomaly favouring breast cancer development (BRCA1 and 2), which increases the indications for prophylactic surgery.

Improved surveillance due, to six-monthly MRI scans, does not reduce the risk of cancer in these young women, but may reduce tumour size at diagnosis.
