Abstract
In today’s world, freight containers and shipping play a massive role for the development of international commerce by handling containers worldwide. Due to lack of a reliable positioning and tracking system, the record of containers is not accurate and results in a number of misplaced, unidentified and lost containers which can become overwhelming over time. This indirectly effects the development of international commerce, especially for countries that rely on imported food, resources and raw materials. In this paper, we discuss the paradigm of Wireless Sensor Networks for a real time localization system to track the location and status of freight containers in a port. We have considered the time of arrival (ToA) method and a two-way ranging scheme. The ISM 2.4 GHz band of Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4 standard) is considered which can be used worldwide for a real time positioning system because of its low cost, communication and low power consumption.
