Abstract

Conventional Multicast transport protocols do not include a dynamic mechanism for group management according to the join/leave of receivers and for the modification of membership information. Also, these protocols need the QoS management function that process various QoS requests from each user in the multicast group. In this paper, we propose a reliable multicast session management protocol called Multicast Session Management Protocol(MSMP). It provides efficient group management function and QoS management functions to support a reliable multicast group communication. The MSMP is an application-layer control protocol for managing QoS and security. The MSMP would be designed to provide the IP multicast-based multimedia applications with a QoS management required for the group multicasting such as QoS monitoring and reporting, key distribution, and key management for cryptographic groups, etc. The MSMP will operate over the conventional transport protocols and/or ECTP, and can be used as a control protocol together with the Group Management Protocol(GMP).
