Abstract
In this contribution we present the development and construction of intrahepatic soft tissue localizers. An electromagnetic sensor coil was attached to a two barbs soft tissue anchor. Afterwards the assembly was integrated into a flexible catheter with an external diameter of 2 mm on a range of approximately 10 mm and glued.
In order to place the localizer in the liver, the catheter was inserted into a slanted cannula with a length of 80 mm and an external diameter of 3 mm. The localizer was directed to the relevant position in the tissue using intraoperative ultrasound and navigation information. When the cannula was withdrawn the barbs extended and anchored the localizer firmly to the tissue.
An experimental approach for evaluating anchor specifications leads to a localizer system that allows fixing the anchor rigidly in the liver and can be handled ergonomically.
Technical and ergonomic verification was performed by inserting the localizer in a pig liver. A resistance experiment with the anchored system showed a durable holding force of 2.5 N, while the tissue was stretched about 10 mm. Stress above this maximum value cause the barbs to withdraw and slip back through the punctured tissue without further damaging it.
