Located in the sparsely populated northern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Greifswald is a medium-sized city located by the Baltic Sea, close to the Island of Ruegen. The city’s history as a member of the Hanseatic League and long established university is today reflected in its official title: The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald.
