Die wachsende Anerkennung der Menschenrechte am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts hat weltweit eine Vielzahl von Bewegungen inspiriert, deren Ziel die Wiedergutmachung historischen Unrechts ist. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Bemühungen stehen die Diktaturen und Massenverbrechen des 20. Jahrhunderts, doch schließt die Forderung nach historischer Gerechtigkeit auch zeitlich sehr viel weiter zurückreichende Ereigniskomplexe wie die Versklavung von Millionen Afrikanern und die genozidale Verdrängung und Ausbeutung indigener Bevölkerungen im Verlauf der europäischen Expansion ein. Mit dieser Entwicklung geht eine wachsende Bereitschaft von Gesellschaften einher, sich offener mit der eigenen Geschichte auseinander zu setzen, Verbrechen und Unrecht anzuerkennen und Entschädigung zu leisten (zur Einführung: Barkan 2000; Brooks 1999; Torpey 2003 u. Torpey 2006; Zimmerer 2004).
