Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff der Familie wird heute zur Kennzeichnung von Partnern oder Einzelpersonen mit Kindern verwendet, die in unterschiedlichsten Konstellationen leben können (für eine Typologie von Familienformen s. Nave-Herz, 2006). Allen diesen Konstellationen ist jedoch gemein, dass sie eine Entwicklungsund Lernumgebung für Kinder darstellen, deren Ausgestaltung nicht im »luftleeren Raum« geschieht. So hängt die Qualität der Familienbeziehungen von Rahmenbedingungen wie der Verfügbarkeit von Kinderbetreuungsangeboten, die mehr oder weniger direkt die Handlungsoptionen und -restriktionen der einzelnen Familienmitglieder beeinflussen, ab. Gleichzeitig prägen aber auch soziokulturelle Bedingungen wie der »Zeitgeist« und gesellschaftlich geteilte Vorstellungen über »gute Erziehung« die Familienbeziehungen, selbst wenn dies den einzelnen Personen oft nicht bewusst ist (► Abschn. 10.1).
Kinder brauchen Nahrung, Schutz, Geborgenheit und intellektuelle Anregung, um sich entfalten zu können. Je jünger sie sind, umso mehr sind sie darauf angewiesen, dass diese Bedürfnisse von anderen Menschen, im Regelfall von den Eltern, befriedigt werden. Gerade in den ersten Lebensjahren können daher Unterschiede in der Qualität familialer Entwicklungsumgebungen die intellektuelle und psychosoziale Entwicklung Heranwachsender deutlich prägen. Wie nachhaltig sich frühkindliche Erfahrungen in den Einstellungen, Kompetenzen und biografischen Verläufen junger Erwachsener niederschlagen, ist umstritten. Ergebnisse prospektiver Längsschnittstudien, in denen Familien über 10 Jahre und mehr hinweg untersucht wurden, weisen auf komplexe Wechselwirkungen zwischen überdauernden Eigenschaften des Kindes und der Eltern (z. B. Temperament, negative Emotionalität), elterlichen Erziehungspraktiken, der Partnerschaftsqualität, und der Konfrontation mit kritischen Lebensereignissen (z. B. Arbeitslosigkeit, psychische Erkrankung eines Elternteils) hin. Wie diese Faktoren »im Normalfall« zusammenspielen und welche Vorhersagekraft ihnen für die psychosoziale Entwicklung zukommt, wird in ► Abschn. 10.2 erläutert. In ► Abschn. 10.3 wird dagegen der Fokus auf die Lern- und Leistungsentwicklung von Kindern und die hierfür maßgeblichen Merkmale familialer Erziehungs- und Sozialisationspraktiken gerichtet. Inwiefern sich kritische Lebensereignisse auf die Eltern-Kind-Beziehung und letztlich auch auf die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Kindern auswirken, wird schließlich in ► Abschn. 10.4 behandelt.
