Autoimmune Conditions During Pregnancy

  • Chapter
  • 1188 Accesses

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a relatively common disease, with an incidence of approximately one per 1,000 women [41]. The mean onset of disease is about 30 years of age [15]; therefore, it is not surprising that SLE and pregnancy may occur coincidentally together, and indeed lupus is seen in approximately one of every 1,660 pregnancies [45].

There is an abundance of material published on SLE in pregnancy; however, despite this vast amount of literature, there is no agreement regarding the effects of pregnancy on SLE clinical manifestations, or whether there are adverse effects of SLE on fetal or maternal outcome [15].
