Ängste sind weit verbreitet und gehören zur normalen Entwicklung eines Kindes. Diese sog. Entwicklungsängste sind vergleichsweise mild, altersspezifisch und vorübergehend. Ihre Inhalte stehen dabei mit der kognitiven Entwicklung des Kindes in Beziehung. Die meisten Kinder haben mehrere Ängste gleichzeitig. Typische Ängste sind solche vor Tieren, vor der Dunkelheit, vor dem Alleinsein sowie Ängste vor Fantasiegestalten und vor Naturkatastrophen. Mit dem Schulalter nehmen dann Ängste vor der Schule, vor Versagen, vor negativer Bewertung durch andere und Gesundheitsängste zu.
