Auszug
Taubheit oder extreme Schwerhörigkeit ist auch in der heutigen Gesellschaft ein kaum zu überwindendes Hindernis für den Betroffenen. Die fehlende Möglichkeit, akustische Informationen auszuwerten, hat auf die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen entscheidenden Einfluss und führt in den meisten Fällen sogar zur Isolation. Noch bis vor wenigen Jahren konnte solchen Menschen nicht geholfen werden; ihre Verständigung war im günstigsten Fall auf das Lippenlesen beschränkt oder aber führte bei angeborener Taubheit zur Ausbildung einer eigenen Kommunikationsform, der Gebärdensprache, die von der normalhörenden Umwelt nicht verstanden wird.
