Abstract

In order to provide sufficient signing information to effectively guide drivers on highway, the advance guide sign should be wisely placed. This research employs a state-of-the-art/practice driving simulator to conduct experiment for evaluating the placement of arrow exit sign on highway taken various factors into consideration. The experimental design focuses on investigating traffic flow rate, highway geometric condition, and human behavior effect on sign placement. A fuzzy table look-up scheme is applied to build up the rule base of input-output pairs. A fuzzy logic system is constructed based on the outcome from the driving test and survey. Based on the analytical results, the optimal advance placement of arrow exit sign is recommended under different combinations of input variables.
