Abstract

A basic introduction to the nuclear shell model is presented, without going to any details of many-body theories. First, we explain how magic numbers and shell structures appear from fundamental properties of nuclei such as the short-range attractive interaction and density saturation. Some concepts needed to understand the shell model are explained from scratch. After a general introduction we focus on a topic of particular current interest, the evolution of shell structure, and discuss the importance of the tensor force.
