Abstract
The above statement represents what many would consider the core philosophy of most public defenders. In 1963, the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, (372 U.S. 335) made it clear that people who are accused of committing crimes have the right to counsel in order to protect their constitutional rights.
It’s self-rewarding in that you know you are trying to help people through the system when they are in a tough time. Most of the people are not really bad people. They just made a mistake... and the knowledge that you have been able to help them out is in itself rewarding. (Jason, personal communication)
