Abstract

Spinal infections are uncommon in childhood; therefore, the clinical workup begins with a high level of suspicion. Spinal infections can be classified as either disc or vertebral body infections (i.e., discitis or verte- bral osteomyelitis, respectively). Indeed, both diseases have distinct epidemiologic, clinical, and radiographic features [78]. In this chapter, pathophysiology, clinical evaluations, and management of discitis, vertebral osteomyelitis, tuberculosis, and postoperative spinal infections observed in childhood will be reviewed.
