Die Anforderungen an Arzneimittel und an Therapeutika steigen kontinuierlich. Eine der wesentlichen Faktoren ist dabei die demographische Entwicklung. Nach Schätzungen der Vereinten Nationen gab es 1998 weltweit 0,6 Mrd. Menschen im Alter von 60 und mehr Jahren. Im Jahr 2050 wird diese Altersgruppe auf mehr als 1,9 Mrd. ansteigen. Abbildung 3.1 illustriert hierzu die Erwartungen der weltweiten demographischen Entwicklung.
